After that day in the hospital when I held my daughter for the first time and saw my childhood through new eyes something in me broke open. But here’s the truth no one tells you:
That moment of clarity doesn’t fix everything.
It just shows you what needs to be fixed. And that’s when the real work begins.
Healing Isn’t a Straight Line
Some days you feel strong. Other days, you snap at the people you love and wonder if you’re any better than the ones who hurt you.
It’s not a clean before-and-after.
It’s not a list you check off.
It’s a long, messy, often invisible process of unlearning what was never yours to carry.
What It’s Looked Like for Me
- Apologizing to my kids when I overreact, instead of pretending nothing happened.
- Crazy Dad Guilt
- Going to therapy even when it’s uncomfortable.
- Sitting with my emotions instead of drowning them in distraction.
- Letting go of guilt when I need space or rest.
- Choosing people who see and respect me, not just tolerate me.
Healing has meant facing myself….the version of me that was shaped by pain, but also the version of me that wants to grow. It’s meant being honest about how deep the wounds go, and still believing I can be more than what happened to me.
It’s Not Always “Inspiring”
Sometimes healing looks like lying in bed, trying not to spiral.
Sometimes it looks like walking away from people you love because they keep crossing the lines you finally learned to draw.
Sometimes it’s saying no to things that used to define you just to protect your peace.
And honestly? Sometimes it’s lonely.
Because once you start choosing yourself, not everyone claps for you.
But I’ll say this:
It’s worth it.
Because you start to feel safe in your own body.
You stop gaslighting yourself.
You become someone your younger self would feel safe with.
You’re Not Failing If It’s Hard
This process isn’t about perfection…it’s about persistence.
You’re not failing if you still get triggered.
You’re not broken if it still hurts.
You’re not behind if it’s taking time.
Healing isn’t a destination. It’s a practice. A choice.
One you make every day, even on the hard ones.
My Reminder to You
If you’re on this path too — I see you.
If it feels heavy today, take a breath.
You’ve already done something brave just by facing it.
That counts. It all counts.
Nothing changes if nothing changes. But real change takes time. Give yourself that time.
You’re worth the work.
Closing Line:
In the next post, I’m going to start opening up about specific stories from my childhood..the memories that still echo, and how I’ve learned to face them without letting them define me.
This next part won’t be easy. But we don’t heal by avoiding the past — we heal by learning how to hold it without letting it hold us.
We keep going….together.
